Adhesives and assembly foams for manufacturing PVC window profiles
Window profiles made of PVC or aluminum are wrapped with decorative films, foamed and installed. Hotmelt adhesives or polyurethane-based foams are used for all three applications.
Window profiles are permanently exposed to extreme loads. These include, for example, weather-related heat, cold or moisture. The laminating adhesive used for the films must be able to withstand these stresses permanently and at the same time contribute to a safe and economically efficient production process. The same applies to assembly foams, and they must also be easy, fast and, above all, safe to process.
Adhesives for window profile wrapping
Adhesives and primer systems used for window profile wrapping need to have very specific properties, as they are permanently exposed to varying weather conditions. KLEIBERIT offers a complete range of products for reliably bonding all kinds of profiles and films used in this field. We draw on decades of experience to provide top-quality products that meet the constantly rising market demands. All KLEIBERIT products that can be used for window laminations are RAL GZ 716-approved.
To improve the bonding results, the profiles are treated with a primer immediately before being laminated. Our modern primer systems are formulated to suit a range of different needs, and are very easy to apply with felt or vacuum application technologies. They are fluorescent, making it is easy to monitor how and where they are applied.
Over the past 25 years, reactive polyurethane (aka: PUR) hotmelts have become increasingly popular for wrapping PVC window profiles. They meet the required high standards and are economical to use. KLEIBERIT’s PUR SK 704 series has already set a quality standard on the market. The products have excellent aging resistance (also known as hydrolysis/thermolysis resistance) and are suitable for almost all PVC and aluminium profiles. They are ideal for using with all KLEIBERIT’s RAL GZ 716-approved primers. An overview of KLEIBERIT’s portfolio for laminating PVC window profiles can be found in theproduct table below.
Adhesives for window sill profile wrapping
Window sills are generally made of plastic, aluminium or particle boards, and then visually or functionally enhanced with films or laminates like those used for laminating window profiles. As indoor window sills are not generally exposed to the weather, different hotmelts can be used as adhesives. Special hotmelts are needed if rigid decor materials such as CPLs are used: they have to easily absorb the high temperatures of the laminating process needed to make the laminate both flexible and seamless.
KLEIBERIT offers state-of-the-art reactive PUR hotmelts and many decades of experience – please contact us for more advice!
Using KLEIBERIT’s HotCoating® technology to pre-coat rolled goods opens up many new possibilities for customizing windows sills. Decorative films can be produced cost-effectively in both small and large runs, personalized to individual wishes. There is practically no limit to the number of possible designs, allowing both large and small companies to offer their customers an unprecedented level of customization. By adding agents for abrasion resistance, HotCoating technology even enables a walkable profile surface for indoor floor-to-ceiling window elements.

Outdoors
More or less the same materials can be used outdoors, but with more weather-resistant properties. The same KLEIBERIT products can be used for outdoor window sills as for laminating window profiles. As the primers and hotmelts have to reliably withstand seasonal weather conditions, KLEIBERIT’s RAL GZ 716-certified adhesives are the products of choice here.

Foaming PVC profiles
Windows play a key role in making a building energy efficient. Intelligent profile foaming can significantly increase the insulation resistance and values of the profiles and, consequently, the windows. The hollow chambers of the PVC profiles are filled with a special two-component polyurethane foam, which additionally increases the stability of the profiles.
KLEIBERIT offers customized 2C systems for foaming PVC profiles. The foam fits tightly around the profile material without actually sticking to it.
Installing PVC and aluminium windows
KLEIBERIT’s single-component PUR assembly foams are the products of choice for fast window installation and effective, long-lasting thermal and sound insulation. They have good joint-filling properties and enormous adhesive strength.
We recommend using KLEIBERIT 1C PUR foam 540.5, which hardens through humidity, and the matching disposable application gun. A good alternative is KLEIBERIT 1C PUR foam 544.4, used with the KLEIBERIT 891.1 foam gun for easy use and precise dosing. Both assembly foams are very low-emission and meet the EMICODE EC 1 requirements (as defined by GEV, the association for emission-controlled installation materials).
Installing window sills and window ledges
2C PUR foams are generally used for installing window sills. They harden independent of moisture in the air, immediately after the two components have been automatically mixed in the container.
We recommend using KLEIBERIT 536.0 for this purpose. It is completely propellant-free, and available in a double cylinder cartridge. With its stable joint-filling properties and enormous adhesive strength, the foam permanently withstands weight loads, ensuring a long-term and secure hold.
